God’s Vision for CHBC: 3 Piers, 3 Pillars, and 3 Purposes

3 Piers: The Centrality of the Scriptures, the Lordship of Christ, and the Glory of God

Jan Hus, a full century before Martin Luther lived, wrote, “Christ is the only head of the church.” This may seem obvious to a group of protestant Christians living in 2024, but while it may be affirmed verbally is it lived out practically in the American church?

The claim of Christ’s Lordship is necessary for salvation; not sinner’s prayers, mystical experiences, raised hands, or the walking of aisles. Romans 10:9 says, “that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be save; ….” Christ’s Lordship over the church is not secondary, but primary. It is foundational to the church.

The trendy practices incorporated into times of corporate worship intended to attract unbelievers is another way the modern church has denied the Lordship of Christ over the church. There is much room for what can be done in worship, but the Bible gives us a regulative principle for worship. His Biblical commands and principles for orderly worship are centered on His Word and the ordinances.

Colossians 1:18, “He is also head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything.”

God’s Vision for CHBC: 3 Piers, 3 Pillars, and 3 Purposes

3 Piers: The Centrality of the Scriptures, the Lordship of Christ, and the Glory of God

All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; 17 so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work. (2 Tim. 3:16-17)

A church does not determine its existence. The church is God’s plan flowing from God’s good and wise will, and therefore must follow God’s design. So, when CHBC thinks about the church we start with God. Where does the church find her purpose and her convictions? Since the intent is to discover that from God, then we discover it in His Word, the Bible.

Therefore, the base of our foundation as a church is the Centrality of the Scriptures. All Scripture is inspired by God (2 Tim. 3:16). This means that it is infallible, or incapable of error. If it is incapable of error, then it contains no error (it is inerrant).

The Bible is profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in our righteousness (2 Tim 3:16). God has provided all that we need for life and godliness by the revelation of Christ through the Word of God (2 Pet. 1:3). The Bible is sufficient for our sanctification (John 17:17). God’s Word equips us for every good work (2 Tim. 3:17) because it is superior to the wisdom of man (1 Cor. 1:20).

We do not worship the Bible; we worship the One true God who is revealed in the precious pages of Scripture. But we do love and value the Word of God for in it we are led to our salvation (2 Cor. 7:10).
